ORIGIN OF LITERACY
INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK
The origin of literacy should start at home and continue to school. We learn how to read and write only if we have been taught how to do so at home. If we were not taught these skills at home, then we would have no idea what was written down. In order to become literate, children need to learn how to recognize the letters and symbols that make up words, then they need to practice writing those same letters and symbols. Therefore, literacy is really just being able to identify and use the tools provided by someone who can help us to create our own unique language.
LETTER RECOGNITION
When a child is learning to read, he or she first
learns to recognize individual letters (i.e., A, B, C, etc.). These letters
represent sounds and are called phonetic forms. The child can say the word
“cat” but cannot tell you where the letter “C” is located in the word. To put
it simply, the child knows how to sound out the word, but does not know the
location of each letter. Letters are also called graphemes. An example of a
grapheme is “E”. When we say that “E” represents a certain sound, we mean that E
represents that particular sound in English. Graphemes are represented by
pictures such as the picture of the letter “E” shown here.
WRITING SYSTEMS AND HOW THEY ARE CREATED
Children go to school to learn to write. There are
many different writing systems, including alphabetic writing systems, syllabary
or logographic systems, and ideographic systems. The system that a child is
taught is based on cultural factors. Alphabetic writing systems are the most
popular in the world today. However, some cultures prefer to use syllabaries,
while others use logograms. What type of system a student uses will influence
their reading and writing abilities. Students who are taught to recognize
letters first have an advantage over students who are taught to recognize shapes
first.
WHY CHILDREN NEED TO LEARN LANGUAGE
There are two basic reasons children need to learn
language. First, children need to communicate with their peers, family members,
teachers, and anyone else around them. Children need to understand the spoken
and written language. Second, children need to develop their thinking skills.
As people throughout history have discovered, language is a tool to help us
think about concepts and ideas. Language helps us express ourselves and express
our thoughts clearly.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS TO HELP THEIR CHILDREN WITH READING AND WRITING
Parents need to help their children become
literate, especially if they are learning to read. Parents need to help
children because illiteracy is a major problem in the United States. It is
estimated that roughly 40 million Americans cannot read. Many countries in
Europe and Asia have extremely high rates of literacy, but unfortunately in the
United States, almost half of our population cannot read or write. Why? The
answer lies in parental involvement.
WHAT CAN GO WRONG IF YOU DON'T TEACH YOUR CHILD HOW TO READ OR WRITE?
If parents don't teach their children the basics of reading and writing, children may get lost in the written world. They might feel disconnected from the real world and they might find themselves unable to participate fully in society. Additionally, if children do not learn how to read and/or write, it could affect their academic performance later in life.
LITERACY
Which language has the highest literacy rate? If
you said English, you would be correct. According to UNESCO, more than 90% of
the population globally speak English at least daily or weekly. That means only
about 9% of the world speaks another language fluently. Of course, this number
has fluctuated over time, but currently, English is dominating worldwide.
In terms of literacy rates, English is
far ahead of other languages, especially those spoken in Africa. Currently,
English has a 95% literacy rate compared to just 3% for French. While English
literacy rates are high, they are expected to decrease significantly over the
next 15 years.
The reason why English speakers
dominate the global market is because of its popularity. There’s no doubt that
learning English is essential, but it also makes sense economically. Not
everyone can afford to become fluent in a foreign language, but businesses are
able to tap into the international market without having to go through the
hassle of translation. This is why English is considered a critical skill for
students.
What’s does literacy mean?
Literacy means being able to read and write well
enough to function at your job and school. Education and skills training help
people achieve their full potential in school, work, and life. A person who
reads and writes well may need different abilities than someone who struggles
with reading and writing. People learn differently and have different learning
styles. Some students prefer to take notes while listening to lectures. Others
learn best when they listen to information and then
