GRAPE TREE
Grapes have long been known for their
sweet taste, rich flavor, and superior nutritional value. They are packed full
of antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, protein, iron, zinc, B-vitamins and many
other beneficial compounds! Grapes are often thought of as being grown in
temperate climates around the world, however, we do have some varieties that
can tolerate cooler temperatures and even make fruit in warmer regions. Grapes
are native to Central Asia, where they were first cultivated about 10,000 years
ago. Today, grapes are grown across the globe, including North America, South
Africa, Japan, Australia, Europe, and much more.
Here
are some of the top reasons to grow grapes:
- As a low maintenance garden shrub – Grape vines require little care, especially if you choose the right variety. You simply need to water and mulch them regularly.
- Grow grape vines indoors – Grape vines will thrive in any environment. Give them lots of sunlight and keep them well fed.
- Make delicious wines – Grape vines produce perfect grapes for wine production.
- Enhance home décor – In addition to producing delicious wine, grapes can also be dried and pressed to create beautiful table arrangements and decorations.
The following list contains some of the best varieties of grapes we recommend.
Riesling – A
classic German white wine grape, rieslings are crisp, refreshing, high acid
wines that grow best in cool climates. Try using them in salads or desserts.
Chardonnay
– Another popular European wine grape, chardonnays are usually light colored
and full bodied wines that pair beautifully with seafood dishes.
Pinot Grigio – A lighter version of pinot gris, this Italian white wine grape produces fruity, refreshing wines that pair perfectly with fish and chicken dishes.
Grenache
– One of the oldest cultivated grapes, grenaches are a dark red wine grape
commonly found in France. Their bright flavors make them perfect for roasting
and baking.
Zinfandel
– An extremely versatile grape that makes excellent wine and juice, zinfandels
are one of the most common American red wines.
What is the lifespan of a grape tree?
- A grape vine tree can live for 100 years if they have been properly cultivated. If they are not grown properly, the lifespan will decrease dramatically and might only last 10-20 years.
- There are many factors that contribute to how long a grape tree lives including age, climate, disease, and nutrition. Grape trees are considered perennial vines that can live for over 40 years. This means that they may produce fruit year round, even in colder climates.
- Fruit production begins at about 15 to 20 years old and continues throughout a plant's lifetime. When plants begin producing grapes, they remain productive until they die.
- Grapes are harvested after their first three years of maturity. After this point in time, the berries become less sweet and bitter tasting.
- Grape trees need plenty of sunlight to thrive. They require a minimum amount of direct sun and should always receive indirect shade. Shade reduces water usage and increases yields.
- Proper care of grape trees includes regular pruning, watering, mulching, and pest control. Grape trees grow best in fertile, moist soils that do not dry out easily. When soil dries out, roots cannot absorb moisture and the trees are vulnerable to wilting.
- Grape vines often get infested with unwanted pests such as aphids and mites. These harmful critters leave behind honeydew, a sticky substance that attracts ants that will eventually eat away at the leaves and flowers. Prune off infected parts immediately and continue to monitor the area around the tree.
- As the tree ages, pruning becomes more difficult because of loss of flexibility. Use a sharp knife or lopper to remove dead limbs and branches. Make sure to work slowly and carefully when pruning older trees.
- When cleaning up your garden, use gloves and wear eye protection. Wear gardening clothes instead of jeans or shorts when working with chemicals and pesticides. Wash thoroughly afterwards.
- Keep track of your grape tree’s health by using a soil test kit if it seems necessary. Do not overfeed your tree; keep the soil well-balanced for proper mineral content. Avoid fertilizing with potash since it encourages root rot.
- Healthy grape trees are able to survive outside temperatures down to -40 degrees F. In winter, protect your tree from harsh wind chills with a blanket or sheet of plywood.
- To encourage fruiting, increase humidity levels in the greenhouse. Mist the canopy daily or spray the foliage weekly with warm water misting or a diluted solution of water.
- Water your grape tree regularly during the summer months (May to September). If possible, avoid overwatering because it causes the tree to lose sap and cause the trunk to split.
- Never let rainwater stand on the ground near your trellis. Raindrops can collect bacteria and mold that can spread to your grapevines once they reach the roots.
How do you grow grapes?
Watering
You should water the grape vines
regularly. When it rains, use a hose connected to sprinklers to water the
vineyard. If it's hot out then use misting systems so that the vines don't dry
out. Make sure to water the vines at least twice a day regardless if you're
using sprinkler systems or not.
Fertilizer
The best fertilizer to use on the
grapes is composted manure. Manure will help replenish the soil with necessary
nutrients and make sure the grapes are getting what they need to grow properly.
You can buy bags of composted manure or you can just make yourself some compost.
To make composted manure, take old kitchen scraps and put them in a pile in
your backyard. In about six months to a year you'll have a nice, rich compost.
Put it in a bag and keep it away from pets and children because it smells
really bad.
Vines
Grape vines are tricky things. They
require a lot of space and they need to be pruned often. Grapevines need sun
exposure, but they need shade too. Give each vine its own spot. Space should
allow room for two vines to get their full amount of sunlight. A good rule of
thumb is that you want to give three times the width of the vine the same
amount of sun as the rest of the garden.
Harvest
When harvesting, wait until the
grapes are fully ripe. Grapes ripen over time and it takes anywhere from 10
days to 30 days for the fruit to be ready. Once you think the grapes look nice
and firm you know they are done. As soon as you harvest, store them in airtight
containers or plastic bags. Be careful not to squash them! Squashing grapes
while picking them off the vine makes them lose their flavor.
Where do grapes plant best to be planted?
In the South
Grapes are native to the
Mediterranean region where they receive plenty of sunshine and heat. They will
thrive there in the summer months. Grapes should not be planted in northern
regions because they require cooler temperatures for optimal production.
West
West is the ideal area for planting
grapes due to its sunny climate and high elevation. Temperatures here stay
above 50 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. Grapes would appreciate these
warmer conditions and produce well.
Northeast
The northeast offers the perfect
amount of sun exposure to prevent shading. When planted in this region, vines
should be trained along trellises to avoid damage from falling limbs.
Northwest
Planting grapes in the northwest
requires a long growing season to reach maturity. Grapevines should be
transplanted at least 12 weeks before being placed outside.
Southeast
This is the ideal place to plant grapes. The southeast receives the most sunlight hours out of any region. These warm conditions allow grapes to ripen naturally.
What are benefits of eating grapes?
Grapes are a fruit that is commonly eaten throughout the world. Grapes have been grown for thousands of years and their health benefits have long been recognized. Growing grapes is a great way to add nutritional value to foods while providing your body with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. A grape contains many different types of nutritional value. There is a wide range of health benefits to eating grapes. While some are more significant than others, they do offer several health benefits that should not be overlooked.
Grape Health Benefits
Antioxidants - Grape skin has high levels of polyphenols (including flavonoids) and anthocyanins, two antioxidant flavonoid compounds. Studies show that people who eat diets rich in apples and blueberries had lower rates of heart disease than those who ate less fruit. Blueberry and apple extracts have shown potent antioxidant activity.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties - Grape seed oil is highly unsaturated. When consumed, it lowers inflammation associated with arthritis, asthma, cancer, Alzheimer's, colitis, Crohn's Disease, diabetes, depression, gout, and psoriasis. Recent studies show that grape seed oil may also help prevent cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. In general, grape seed oil is known to reduce inflammation.
Fiber - Eating
grapes provides fiber which lowers cholesterol levels and prevents
constipation. Grapes also provide dietary fiber which helps to keep blood
glucose levels stable.
Vitamins and Minerals - One cup of
Concord grapes provides 80 mg of folate; three cups supply 1,000 mcg of vitamin
C. Grapes are also high in iron, manganese, copper, phosphorous, zinc, B
vitamins, potassium, selenium, and magnesium.
More About Grapes - Grapes contain phytochemicals, including resveratrol. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant found naturally in various fruits and vegetables. Studies indicate that resveratrol mimics the action of calorie restriction, which extends lifespan in animals.
Grapes are among the oldest
cultivated fruits in the world. Wine was first produced about 10,000 years ago.
Grape skins are one of the richest sources of natural fiber in nature. Grape
pips were once used to make wine stoppers. Grapes have traditionally been used
as medicine and food. Over time, they have become one of the most popular fruit
juices.
Varieties of grapes vary greatly in
their taste, appearance, size, and color. You can choose between red, white,
purple, black, green, yellow, and brown varieties. Grapes can be eaten fresh,
dried, frozen, or juiced. Many varieties of grapes are grown specifically for
making wine. Others are used for table grapes.
Grapelike berries are actually drupes. A drupe is a fleshy fruit containing a stone or pit. Grape seeds are called pomes. Grapes should be stored at room temperature since cold temperatures cause them to lose flavor. High humidity tends to mold them on the surface.
