Thiruvannamalai History:

Tirupur is named after Lord Shiva's wife Parvati (Goddess of the Earth) - "Vennamalai" translates to 'Land of Parvati'. The name reflects the reverence people had for the fertility goddess. The Tamil speaking people believed that the goddess herself blessed the fertile land around the temple.

Thirukkural's first temple was built around 100 BC. The town that grew up around the temple eventually came to be known as Trichy. The temple was rebuilt twice in the early medieval period - under the Vijayanagara Empire and then again in the 16th century AD.

In 1801, the British East India Company captured the region and renamed it Madurai District. Later in 1901, the city was divided into two parts – Old City and New City. The old city became the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu and remains its capital today. The new town was later merged with Madurai district and is now included in the same district

Who lights the Thiruvannamalai lamp?

The answer isn't simply "the sun".

The lamps at Vadapathu Sree Mahadevar temple in Tamil Nadu, India have been lit since 1650 A.D.

Vadapathu Sreekovil (Temple of Goddess Durga) was built in 1650 A.D., making this lamp among the oldest functioning lamps in the world. The Sri Lankan Jaffna peninsula has several ancient temples dating back thousands of years. Many of these temples were destroyed in a fire in 1857; some temples were rebuilt after the fire and some were never rebuilt. The temple was rebuilt again in 1790-1795 to its present appearance. The original temple was designed according to Hindu architecture principles. The original design was changed to resemble Greek style.

In order to keep the oil burning continuously, they installed a manual mechanism using two men who pulled the cords attached to the chains.

The temple priests were responsible for maintaining the flame. Today, the lamps are maintained manually without any electricity.

Temples where consecration takes place:

  • Pattabhishekam of Lord Muruga will be held at Tiruparangunram, Swamimalai during Karthikai Deepam.
  • In all the temples, special abhishekam, decoration and Deeparatana are held for Murugan. In the evening, light the Chokkapan, light the Karthikappan, and perform the Karthikai Pai Pmmai Pm.
  • Temples, houses, shops, ponds and hills in Tamil Nadu are all decorated with traditional lights.
  • Usually special poojas are done to Lord Muruga on all Krithika Nakshatras. In the month of Karthigai (November-December) Krithigai Nakshatra falls on Poornami (full moon day).
