Here’s a simplified version of the relationships, explained in a way that children can easily understand:

 

Immediate Family

Parent           – Your mother or father.

Mother         – Your mom.

Father           – Your dad.

Daughter      – A girl child in the family.

Son                 – A boy child in the family.

Sibling           – Your brother or sister.

Sister             – A girl in the family, born to the same parents.

Brother          – A boy in the family, born to the same parents.

 

Special Relationships

Spouse                                  – A person who is married to someone.

Wife                                      – A woman who is married.

Husband                              – A man who is married.

Elder Brother/Sister          – A brother or sister who is older than you.

Younger Brother/Sister   – A brother or sister who is younger than you.

 

Grand Family

Grandparent                   – Your mom or dad's parent.

Grandmother                – Your mom or dad’s mother.

Grandfather                   – Your mom or dad’s father.

Great Grandfather       – Your grandfather’s father.

Great Grandmother     – Your grandmother’s mother.

Grandchild                      – A child of your own child.

Granddaughter             – A girl grandchild.

Grandson                        – A boy grandchild.

 

Extended Family

Nephew        – Your brother or sister’s son.

Niece             – Your brother or sister’s daughter.

Aunt               – Your mom or dad’s sister.

Uncle             – Your mom or dad’s brother.

 

In-laws (Related by Marriage)

Mother-in-law          – Your husband or wife’s mother.

Father-in-law            – Your husband or wife’s father.

Brother-in-law          – Your sister’s husband or your spouse’s brother.

Sister-in-law              – Your brother’s wife or your spouse’s sister.

Daughter-in-law       – Your son’s wife.

Son-in-law                 – Your daughter’s husband.

 

 

Other Relationships

Bachelor                – A man who is not married.

Spinster                  – A woman who is not married.

Widower               – A man whose wife has died.

Widow                   – A woman whose husband has died.

Boyfriend              – A boy you like or are close to.

Girlfriend               – A girl you like or are close to.

Cousin                    – The child of your uncle or aunt.

 

Step Family

Stepmother          – A woman married to your dad but not your real mom.

Stepfather             – A man married to your mom but not your real dad.

Stepsister               – A girl who is the child of your stepmother or stepfather.

Stepbrother          – A boy who is the child of your stepmother or stepfather.

Stepson                  – A boy your husband or wife has from another marriage.

Stepdaughter       – A girl your husband or wife has from another marriage.
