Chaturtham is a Hindu festival celebrated in honor of Lord Ganesha, the remover
of obstacles. It falls on the fourth day of the bright half of the moon
(Chaitra) in the month of Vaishakha (August-September). On this day, devotees
worship Ganesha by offering him sweets called 'Pongal' and pray for their
wishes to be fulfilled.
The celebration of Vinayaka Chaturtha is
observed across India. In Tamil Nadu, the celebrations begin with the immersion
of Ganesh idols in rivers and lakes. The idols are then taken out and
worshipped at various temples.
In Karnataka, the festivities start with the
immersion of idols in ponds and tanks. The idols are later taken out and
immersed in rivers. Devotees offer prayers to the deities and perform rituals
to remove obstacles.
In Maharashtra, the celebrations start with
the immersion of the idols in water bodies. Later, they are taken out and
offered prayers. People visit temples and offer prayers to the deities.
In Andhra Pradesh, the celebrations start with
immersion of the idols in rivers and lakes followed by taking them out and
worshipping them. Devotees offer prayer to the deities and perform ritualistic
activities to remove obstacles.
The celebrations continue till the end of the month.

in Tamil Nadu, India. In Tamil Nadu, Vinayagar Chaturti is celebrated in the
month of April. On this day, people offer prayers to Lord Muruga and his
consort Goddess Parvati. People celebrate Vinayagar Chaturtha festival with

United States, Europe, Africa, Middle East, and many other countries.
Vinayagar chaturtha is celebrated in many
parts in the world. Vinayagar Chaturthi is observed in the Tamil month of
Aippasi (April - May) in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
The festival is celebrated with great fervor
and devotion. The devotees worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvathi. The
festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy.
On the first day of the festival, the idol of
Lord Ganesha is taken out of the house and placed at the entrance of the
temple. Then the idols of Goddess Parvathi and Lord Shiva are brought out of
the temple. After that, the idols of Goddess Durga and Goddess Kali are brought
out of the temples. Finally, the idols of Lord Murugan and Goddess Saraswati
are brought out of the houses.
After the idols have been brought out of the
houses, they are taken around the streets of the town. Devotees sing songs
praising the deities.
People take holy bath in the river on the last
day of the festival. They perform pooja rituals and offer prayers to the
deities.
Lord Ganesha is worshipped on the first day of
the celebration. He is believed to remove obstacles from our path. His vehicle
is a mouse.
Goddess Parvathi is worshipped on the second
day. She is known as the mother of Ganesh. Her vehicle is a rat.
Lord Shiva is worshipped on the third day. He
is considered to be the destroyer of evil. His vehicle is a snake.
Goddess Durga is worshipped on the fourth day.
She is the goddess of power and courage. Her vehicle is a lion.
Kali is worshipped on the fifth day. She is
the dark aspect of the three mothers. Her vehicle is a tiger.
Saraswati is worshipped on the sixth day. She
is the mother of Vedas. Her vehicle is a cow.
Murugan is worshipped on the seventh day. He
is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi and the brother of Lord Ganesha.
His vehicle is a bull.

Vinayaka pooja is performed at home or temple.
In this pooja, we offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. We pray to him to bless us with
good health, wealth, prosperity, happiness, peace, love etc.

The day of vinayaka pooji is celebrated as
vinayaka chaviti. On this day, devotees visit temples and perform poojas.
People worship lord vinayaka and offer prayers to him.

Homam
On this day, people take bath in holy water.
Then they apply sandal paste on their body and head. After that they wear
sacred thread and dress up nicely. They then go to the temple and do homam
(fire rituals).
Vinayaka Darshan
After doing homam, devotees go to the temple
and watch vinayaka darshan. Devotees put their hands together and bow down
before lord vinayaka.

Devotees chant vinayaka mantra while offering
flowers to lord vinayaka on his feet.
Vinayaka Puja
On this day, devotees offer prayers to lord
vinayak. They sing songs praising lord vinayaka, and give gifts to each other.
Vinayaka Aarti
Aarti means lighting lamp. On this day, people
light lamps and offer them to lord vinayaki.
Lord Vinayaka Chathurthi Pooja
The
pooja begins at 6 am on the day of Vinayaka Chathurti (the birthday of Lord Ganesha)
and ends at 12 noon.
Pancha Mahapooja
Pancha
mahapooja means five kinds of puja. These are:
- Abhishekam - In which water is poured over the idol of Ganesh
- Arati - In which flowers are offered to the idol of Ganesh.
- Prasadam - Food offerings are given to the devotees.
- Darshanam - The devotees get a chance to view the idol of Ganesh face to face.
- Aarti - Devotees offer prayers to the deity.
