Mysterious territories

The history of mankind knows many lands and territories that have not survived to this day. And if the existence of some is proven, then others remain only part of the legends. For centuries they excite the imagination of the townsfolk both with facts and with the mystery of the disappearance. Your attention is "a dozen" mysterious territories that have been lost forever.

Kumari Kandam

Kumari Kandam

"Lemuria" (comprising much of the Indian Ocean) in Tamil nationalist mystical literature, connecting Madagascar, South India and Australia. Some Tamil writers such as Devaneyab Bhavanar have associated Lemuria with the legendary landmass of Kumari Kandam mentioned in Tamil literature and claimed that it was the cradle of civilization.

In fairness, it is worth noting that the mythical continent of Kumari Kandam deserves no less attention. It is most often spoken of in the folklore and beliefs of the Tamils, one of the many Indian peoples. They believed that in ancient times there was a continent that united Australia, Hindustan, Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Kumari Kandam, according to local legends, was the residence of talented poets and scientists of that time, but one day the depths of the ocean swallowed up this amazing place. But, apart from numerous poems of the Tamil people, no real evidence of the existence of the legendary continent has ever been found.

Cantref Gwaelod

Cantref Gwaelod

Cantref Gwelod is a whole legendary state, which was located below sea level in Cardigan Bay and was surrounded on all sides by high walls. According to the surviving legend, the reason for the death of this point on the map was the forgetfulness of the servant, who was seduced by the king, and she did not close the gate in the wall, as a result of which the water flooded the city. For many years, the existence of a mythical state was not recognized, until in 2014, on the shores of Cardigan Bay, a raging storm revealed petrified stumps and boulders, as well as ancient wooden sidewalks that had rotted due to being under water. Given the coincidence of the approximate coordinates of the location of Cantref Gwelod, many people decided that it was he, who, after all, actually existed, appeared on the surface.

Maida Island

Maida Island

For quite a long period in the Middle Ages, there was an island on the maps, the silhouette of which resembles a crescent moon. It was called Mayda (Mayda), and it was located near the southwestern coast of Ireland. There is almost no information about him, except for the very cards where various monsters were depicted on him. Thus, the cartographers, apparently, tried to show that this place is dangerous for travelers. The last documented mention of Maida Island dates back to 1906, and then it seemed to evaporate. And although in the second half of the last century, land of a similar shape was found near the coast of Ireland at a depth of 30-35 meters, but it is virtually impossible to prove that this is really a semi-mythical Maida at the moment.

Thule

Thule

The first mention of this mysterious territory, which is known to historians, was left by the ancient writer Pytheas, and dates back to the fourth century BC. Thule was described by him as a country of ice and fog, located in the northern part of Europe. A little later, Virgil left evidence of him, and even Christopher Columbus. According to the editors of Novate.ru, he claimed to have stumbled upon this place during one of his expeditions to America. True, modern researchers suggest that the territory that was described by Pytheas was either Iceland or Scandinavia. There are other versions, according to which Thule is Great Britain or Scotland. In any case, official evidence of the existence of this region has never been found.

Lyoness

Lyoness

Another island off the coast of Foggy Albion, which is also associated with local folklore. Only this time we will talk about the cycle of legends about King Arthur: in them, Lionesse is depicted as the birthplace of one of the characters in the epic - Tristan. There are also lesser-known local legends according to which this island was lost after it was swallowed up by the ocean depths as a punishment for the sins of its inhabitants. It is believed that only one person managed to escape, who came out of the waters on a white horse. By the way, modern scientists do not exclude the real existence of Lyoness. They believe that it was part of the Scilly archipelago and suggest that the reason for the flooding of the island was a change in the currents of the waters and the melting of large amounts of ice.

Iram

Iram

Another lost city, the mention of which is not found anywhere, but in the Koran. In his texts, Iram is called a rich kingdom, whose ruler was King Shaddad, and it was he who was the cause of the death of a prosperous place. According to the information from the Koran, his vanity and greed became the starting point for the fact that Iram was swallowed up by a sandstorm. And only in 1992, on the territory of modern Oman, archaeologists discovered the remains of majestic buildings, which are now buried under a thick layer of sand. A number of researchers believe that these ruins are what remains of the legendary Iram.

Hy-Brazil

Hy-Brazil

Hy-Brazil Island, which was also located on the map near Ireland, was often confused with the aforementioned Maida Island, but in fact it was more rounded than the latter. Many interesting legends are associated with it. For example, sailors sailing in those places spread stories about an island that suddenly appeared out of the fog, and its inhabitants gave travelers a lot of silver and gold. And others said that you can see this mysterious place only once every seven years - the rest of the time it is hidden by dense Irish fogs. But researchers prefer to consider the island of Hy-Brasil nothing more than a mythical territory that lives not in reality, but in ancient Irish legends.

Maurizia

Maurizia

There is a mysterious island and next to Mauritius. We are talking about a territory called Mauritia, which is often called part of the Kumari Kandam continent. There is a generalizing version of the existence of this island, which suggests that it could have disappeared from the face of the Earth about eighty-five million years ago as a result of a shift in tectonic plates. However, only in 2013, a group of scientists discovered real evidence that Mauricius really was - the remains of the island were found, which is now buried under a thick layer of volcanic rock.

Isle of Mu

Isle of Mu

Often legends are formed not only about the existence and death of cities and states, but also entire continents. A striking example of the latter is the history of the island of Mu. It is believed that it was only nominally an island, but in size it turned out to be comparable to a full-fledged continent. In addition, Mu is called the habitat of many developed civilizations. Proponents of the version of the existence of the continent put forward the assumption that it was from there that the settlement of North and South America, as well as Eurasia, began. Official science does not confirm the existence of the island-continent of Mu, however, the remains of an ancient temple that were found near the Japanese island of Yaeyama are often presented as proof of the reality of this mysterious region.

Shambhala

Shambhala

It is difficult to find a more famous legendary land than Shambhala. The first mention of it in the texts of the Mahabharata, and a little later - in the Kalachakra documents. Both sources describe Shambhala as a beautiful kingdom located in a picturesque valley. It is believed that there were no sick or old people there. And only the twenty-first century has allowed researchers, perhaps one step closer to unraveling the mystery of Shambhala. In 2007, archaeologists in the Monthang region of Nepal discovered a large number of valleys and caves that preserved ancient religious texts dating back to the period before the dramatic reformation of Tibetan Buddhism. The authenticity of these finds has been confirmed, and many scientists believe that they are either the remains of a civilization from Shambhala, or clues where to look for the legendary place.
